Spotlight On . . .
Christopher’s World Grille

Isn’t it amazing what using quality ingredients and seasonings can do to change a “blaah” meal into an “aaah” meal? My husband, Century 21 Beal, Inc. Realtor ® Stephen “catfish” Thomas (http://www.bryanneighbors.com/index.php?pageId=409462), treated me to a birthday dinner recently at Christopher’s World Grille (www.christophersworldgrille.com ) in Bryan and it was indeed amazing! From the minute our waiter, Jeff Markowski, greeted us until we left an hour later, we felt as if we were his only customers. He did a superb job and was very cordial and professional. Thank you, Jeff, for making our evening so pleasurable! The scrumptious homemade breads and olive dipping sauce were just enough to take the edge off our hunger. We’re thinking “let’s take it slow and easy, and just relish the flavors and ambiance; let’s go for an appetizer.” I knew I had to have the Almond Crusted Brie with Chutney because I’d tried it before and it’s always worth a repeat. The “crust” has just the right crunch to encapsulate the melting brie. Spoon a dollop onto the toast points with a drizzle of the fruited chutney and you have a heavenly mouthful! Steve had the Southwest Grilled Crab Cake and thoroughly enjoyed the seafood cake with its slightly spicy chipotle sauce. Okay, we’re starting to feel some “fullness” here. Let’s eat slower. We still have our main entrees to go! The next course for Steve consisted of the most tender, flavorful pepper-encrusted ribeye on a bed of “French fry coleslaw.” No kidding! For the man who loves his meat and potatoes, this is a unique way to get it with fresh veggies tossed in the mix! My main course was the Zihuatanejo Snapper with jumbo lump crab meat and pico de gallo in a light lemon butter sauce. The fish was very mild—just the way I like it. The combination of flavors was nothing short of inspirational! Like I said, it was my birthday. Being quite stuffed at this point, we elected to pass on dessert, even though the choices looked fabulous. We’ll have to save that for another day. Instead, Jeff brought out a plate with “Happy Birthday from Christopher’s” written in chocolate around the rim. In the center were two perfect dark chocolate-dipped strawberries with white chocolate drizzle placed in a piped whipped cream/cream cheese blossom, all atop a splendid fruit and cream sauce. Hey, there’s always room for fruit, right??? Thank you to the very warm, hospitable staff of Christopher’s for a lovely evening, and my compliments to the chefs!

Ahhh, Go Take A Hike

I discovered a new walking trail in Bryan (http://www.bryantx.gov/) today. Well, okay, so it’s not NEW new. In fact, it’s showing signs of age. And I don’t know if it is just the improved frame of mind exercise brings, but I really enjoyed the walk, despite the 95% humidity and the 90 degree outdoor temps! The Rosewood Nature Trail (http://www.bryantx.gov/departments/index.html?name=pf_rosewood_trail) is probably one-half to three-quarters of a mile in length (per my acute mental calculation) and runs along Turkey Creek from West Villa Maria through the back of the Rosewood/Shirewood #1 subdivision. It is a respite from the sun, being almost 100% tree-shaded. The asphalt path, though showing definite signs of wear, still provides a good combination of both level and easy climbs. Yes, the sounds of traffic on West Villa Maria and the occasional youthful voices at play at Mary Branch Elementary can still be heard, but they seem far removed. My husband and I also enjoy the meandering walking trail behind the Carriage Hills and Sherwood IV & V subdivisions (http://gis.bryantx.gov/gis/website/hoa/viewer.htm). It’s a newer trek completed last year with concrete sidewalks and benches for those who want or need an occasional resting spot. There’s a neat pond along the way where we can usually get glimpses of turtles and other wildlife. Hats off to the City of Bryan (http://www.bryantx.gov/) for including walking trails in its planning. Whether it’s a forethought or an afterthought matters not. Keep up the good work!
